Jim Koepnick is a Digital Journalist and member of the Sigma Ambassador team specializing in
aviation, sports and documentary photography. His current freelance clients include Sigma
lenses, Flying Magazine, Plane and Pilot, Air and Space Smithsonian, Our Wisconsin Magazine
and Cirrus aircraft. Local clients include Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, Discover
Oshkosh and Old Glory Honor Flight.
Previously, Jim was Chief Photographer at the Experimental Aircraft Association for 28 years.
He was responsible for much of EAA’s air-to-air photography for its five publications. He has
photographed over 1000 aircraft while on air-to-air missions and supplied over 550 cover
images while at EAA.
Koepnick’s artistry, skill and experience have resulted in award-winning images that have been
printed in magazines such as Life, Time, Men’s Journal, People and Popular Mechanics. His
advertising work includes Columbia Coffee, Sigma lenses, Daher aircraft, Cirrus aircraft and
Canon.
His photography has has been a consistent winner of awards from Aviation Week and Space
Technology, Wisconsin Imaging Photographers Association, American Advertising Federation
and Calendar Marketing Association. In 2012 he received the George Hall Lifetime
Achievement award from the International Society of Aviation Photographers. In 2023 he
received a career achievement award from the International Photographic Council at the UN.
